The goal of UNSETTLEMENT is to travel the full length of the U.S. east coast, Florida to Maine and back again. But deciding where to go specifically is an exciting and overwhelming task! With our little house on our back, so to speak, a whole world of possibilities is suddenly open to us and so I find myself spending hours plotting and planning our route.
There are a few places we know we will stop. I have wanted to see the wild ponies on Chincoteague and Assateague Islands since I was a little girl and read Misty of Chincoteague. That definitely needs to be a stop on our journey.
We will be spending a week in July as artists in residence at Searsport Shores on Maine’s Penobscot Bay, marking the northern-most point in our journey. I can’t tell you how much we are looking forward to Maine, where the average high temperature in July is a mere 76 and the average low drops waaaaay down to 56. For comparison, the high in Savannah today is 86 – in April! Savannah’s average high in July is 93 so 76 is going to feel downright chilly to us! I can’t wait!
We also know that we will wrap up our journey on Anna Maria Island in Florida. But in between? We are wide open, baby.
There are a few places I would like to stop along the way:
Burlington, Vermont, where my Grandmother Sophie grew up . . .
Colonial Williamsburg, because I think the kids are at the perfect age for it . . .
The Greenbriar valley of West Virginia where I spent summers as a child . .
But I also very much want to hear from YOU. What are the best RV parks, camp sites, state or national parks? Where should we go? And where will YOU be this summer?
